Hello? How low? With the lights out, you can’t taste it…Smells like unclean spirit

A hotel near Looe has been fined £3,000 after bottles behind the bar labelled as containing Smirnoff Vodka and Gordons Gin were found not to contain those brand of spirits.

RHR Kernow Ltd and Ross Lewin, a director of the owning company, were also ordered to pay combined costs of £3,000 at the hearing at Bodmin Magistrates Court on 8 March 2017.

The court case followed a routine inspection of the Trelaske Hotel, Polperro Road, Looe, when bottles of Smirnoff Vodka and Gordons Gin behind the bar at the hotel were tested for authenticity. On testing it was discovered the spirits in the bottles were not those brands, but had been substituted with a different product.

The Court took into account the Company’s guilty plea and the implementation of improved systems, ordering them to pay a combined fine of £3,000, combined costs of £3,000 and a combined victim surcharge of £270, making a total of £6,270.

Matthew Collings, Trading Standards Officer said, “Trading Standards’ inspections of businesses allow us to ensure  a fair and level playing field for businesses.  We hope the outcome of this case will reassure consumers that we consider the truthful description of food products to be a priority area of work in protecting the public.”
