As the first late night Christmas shopping gets under way in Truro tonight, Cornwall Council has announced that it will offer Christmas shoppers one day’s free parking in paid-for car parks across Cornwall in the run up to the festive season.

You will be able to park for free on one day to support trading in town centres (see list below).

There’s no free parking for tonight’s celebrations in our capital but shoppers coming to Truro this Saturday (2 December) can use the two Park and Ride sites for free, as well as seven Cornwall Council run car parks around the City.

For many people, it’s the payday weekend before Christmas that retailers call ‘Super Saturday’. This combined with free parking will make it one of the busiest trading days for the city’s retailers.

If that sounds like an unbearable level of hell to you, then don’t say you haven’t been warned!

You can also park for free this Saturday in Redruth, Hayle, St Austell, St Ives, Penryn, Looe, Mevagissey, Callington and Port Isaac.

It might be a bit busy in Truro’s Primark this Saturday then! (Have a thought for the staff!)

The council has come in for recent criticism over parking. It was revealed that the Council made a £9.7 million profit on council run car parks last year, £200,000 of which came from the machines not giving change. The council say this surplus is ploughed straight back into vital services like social care and without it, services would have to be cut.

Council Leader Adam Paynter said: “Cornwall’s towns are great places to visit during the festive season and we’re proud to support our local economies by offering free parking in the busy build-up to Christmas. Not only does this mean people can take their time shopping, it also means people can spend more time in cafes and restaurants. You don’t get that experience shopping online.”

Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport Geoff Brown said: “We’ve offered a day’s free parking before – which is all about getting people to shop locally and support local businesses during the festive period. We have some fantastic shops across Cornwall and we want to make sure that people have plenty of time to browse and enjoy them.”

88 Cornwall Council run car parks which usually charge for parking will be free for one day.

Many Town and Parish Councils have, like Truro, selected this Saturday 2 December as their free parking day but other places have chosen their date to encourage people to come along to festive events they already had planned.

All Cornwall Council car parks are clearly branded and the Council will be displaying posters about the parking offer at the charging points on the day when parking is free.
