DESCRIPTION:Penlee House Gallery & Museum \nFrom 29 July to 31 August\, the upstairs Local History Gallery at Penlee House Gallery & Museum will feature a small display of paintings by John Willie Matthewman (1877–1947). \nBorn in Sheffield\, Matthewman moved to Penberth in 1928 and spent many years painting the landscapes and coastline of West Cornwall. His work reflects a close familiarity with the area\, capturing places that remain recognisable today. \nAlthough not as widely known as some of his contemporaries\, Matthewman exhibited with the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1937\, and one of his paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy\, London\, the following year. \nCurated by Gordon Matthewman\, a descendant of the artist\, this selection of works offers a rare opportunity to see paintings displayed close to the landscapes in which they were created\, providing a glimpse into the artistic and social history of the area. \nUsual admission charges apply.

SUMMARY:Social History Display: John Willie Matthewman
DESCRIPTION:Penlee House Gallery & Museum \nFrom 29 July to 31 August\, the upstairs Local History Gallery at Penlee House Gallery & Museum will feature a small display of paintings by John Willie Matthewman (1877–1947). \nBorn in Sheffield\, Matthewman moved to Penberth in 1928 and spent many years painting the landscapes and coastline of West Cornwall. His work reflects a close familiarity with the area\, capturing places that remain recognisable today. \nAlthough not as widely known as some of his contemporaries\, Matthewman exhibited with the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1937\, and one of his paintings was accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy\, London\, the following year. \nCurated by Gordon Matthewman\, a descendant of the artist\, this selection of works offers a rare opportunity to see paintings displayed close to the landscapes in which they were created\, providing a glimpse into the artistic and social history of the area. \nUsual admission charges apply.

DESCRIPTION:Women have made huge impacts on the development of British art. However\, they have often been underrepresented\, overlooked and undervalued in their fields. \nMaking Her Mark celebrates notable female artists from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day\, with extraordinary works by Elizabeth Forbes\, Laura Knight\, Dod Procter\, Caroline Walker\, Tracey Emin and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham\, amongst many more. \nThis unique collaboration between Penlee House Gallery & Museum\, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and Kirkcaldy Galleries\, part of cultural charity OnFife\, brings together over 50 works by women artists from their respective collections. \nThis major exhibition is part of Going Places\, an Art Fund programme made possible with major support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Julia Rausing Trust. \n\n\n\nAdult: £8 Young people (18-26): £4 Children: Free Accompanying Carers: Free
