Cornish Language Weekend Celebrates Culture and Encourages Learning

In the vibrant heart of spring, the Cornish language finds a fresh platform for celebration and growth during the much-anticipated language weekend hosted by Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek, a leading support organisation for the revitalisation of the Cornish language.

This annual event, known as Pennseythen Gernewek, is a beacon for both fluent speakers and learners, offering an array of activities designed to immerse participants in the language in a joyful, relaxed atmosphere.

This year’s event promises a rich tapestry of linguistic, cultural, and creative endeavours. Attendees can look forward to focused language sessions, workshops covering diverse topics such as publishing in Cornish, alongside games, creative writing exercises, and a variety of social activities. Highlights include singing, music, and a special performance by Ed (Kernow King), crafted to celebrate the nuances and beauty of the Cornish language.

The weekend also caters to families and those new to the language. An innovative course designed for beginners and near-beginners, dubbed “An Enys The Island” by course leader Will (Golden Tree), is set to take participants on an imaginative journey across four workshops, making it a perfect introduction to Cornish.

Originally set to take place at Heartlands in Pool, a sudden withdrawal of Heartland’s funding forced the organisers to seek a new venue. In a turn of fortunate events, Cornwall Council offered Lys Kernow in Truro as a new location, ensuring the event could accommodate its expected large attendance from April 12th to 14th.

The resurgence of interest in the Cornish language, fueled by its integration into primary education across Cornwall and a global online community, underscores the weekend’s significance. It stands not just as a celebration but as a crucial gathering point for all levels of Cornish speakers, from the curious beginner to the seasoned linguist.

For those interested in being a part of this linguistic journey, further details and registration information are available on the Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek website. The event not only underscores the growing momentum behind the Cornish language’s revival but also highlights the community’s resilience and adaptability in the face of unexpected challenges.
