Cornwall Air Ambulance Records Over 500 Missions in First Half of 2024

Published On: 18 July 2024Last Updated: 18 July 2024By

Cornwall Air Ambulance was tasked to an impressive 525 missions in the first six months of 2024, marking a significant increase in activity for the charity. Of these missions, 212 were trauma incidents, 162 were medical-related, 141 were cardiac arrests, and 10 were inter-hospital transfers.

This surge in missions follows the charity’s busiest May on record, with 117 call outs, representing a nearly 20% increase compared to May 2023. June also saw a notable rise, with 105 taskings, a 28% increase from the 82 call outs in June the previous year.

Anticipation for Increased Demand

Adam Smith, Unit Chief Pilot, highlighted the charity’s anticipation of even higher demand during the summer months. “We know that the summer period is always our busiest time of year, and we’re expecting our mission numbers to rise further as the population of our county increases. This puts extreme demand on our helicopter,” Adam explained.

The charity is currently operating with one AW169 helicopter, but with increased flying hours comes more wear-and-tear and maintenance requirements. Adam emphasised the importance of acquiring a second helicopter to ensure continuous availability and capability of their fleet. “Owning a second AW169 aircraft will ensure that when online, our crew will always be able to respond on the most capable helicopter, even during those times of planned or unplanned maintenance.”

Heli2 Appeal Fundraising Efforts

The Heli2 Appeal aims to secure a second helicopter by the end of the year, with a target of £2.85 million. So far, the appeal has raised just over £1 million. Tim Bunting, Chief Executive, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and urged continued contributions.

“We are incredibly grateful to every single person who donates to the charity, whether that be through a cake sale, a skydive, through our lottery, or by putting your spare change in the pot at your local petrol station,” Tim said. “Every penny really does make a lifesaving difference. We’re calling on the people of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, and beyond to help us land your second helicopter. We want to ensure that we can always respond to you, your friends, family, or loved ones, on the best suited helicopter, should they ever need us. Thank you for your support.”
