Cornwall Celebrates Accessibility with Five New Changing Places Toilets

Published On: 19 July 2024Last Updated: 19 July 2024By

Friday 19th July marks Changing Places Awareness Day, a significant occasion for Cornwall as five new Changing Places facilities have become available for use.

These new installations, including locations at Green Street by the bus station and Boscawen Park in Truro, are designed to offer larger, more accessible toilets for disabled individuals and their carers whose needs are not met by standard accessible toilets.

Funding and Collaboration

The development of these facilities was made possible through a partnership between Truro City Council and Cornwall Council, which received government funding in 2022 to deliver these essential amenities. By the end of this month, all six facilities will be fully operational and accessible to the public.

Community Impact

Carol Mould, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the positive impact these facilities will have on the community. “It’s fantastic to see these high-quality facilities now open and being used by residents. It means that visiting Cornwall’s beautiful beaches, countryside and high streets is a lot more accessible for disabled people and their carers,” she said.

Carol also extended her gratitude to everyone involved in making this project a reality, including town and parish councillors, ward members, contractors, and council officers. Their collective efforts have significantly improved accessibility across Cornwall.

Locations of New Facilities

The six new Changing Places facilities are strategically located in various parts of Cornwall to ensure widespread accessibility:

  • Falmouth: Managed by Falmouth Town Council
  • Truro: Two facilities, one next to the bus station and the other in Boscawen Park, managed by Truro City Council
  • Seaton: Managed by Deviock Parish Council
  • St Ives: Managed by St Ives Town Council
  • Wadebridge: Managed by Wadebridge Town Council
