Cornwall’s Auction Scene Gets a Major Boost: Hansons Cornwall Set to Open in Penzance

A thriving Penzance auction house is set to reopen under new ownership, bringing one of Britain’s leading fine art and antiques firms to Cornwall.

A New Chapter for The Harbour Saleroom

The Harbour Saleroom, formerly Barbara Kirk Auctions, will reopen on 2nd January 2025 as Hansons Cornwall. The move marks the 11th saleroom in Hansons Auctioneers’ expanding portfolio. Founded in 2005 by TV personality Charles Hanson, the company has grown from its Derbyshire headquarters to operate in locations across the UK, including London, Staffordshire, and Norfolk.

Charles, known for his appearances on popular TV antiques programmes, expressed his excitement about the expansion. “Hansons celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, and I can’t think of a better way to mark it than bringing our services to the people of Cornwall, Devon and the southwest peninsula up to Exeter,” he said.

The Penzance saleroom will specialise in Asian and Islamic works of art, rugs, jewellery, silver, watches, militaria, toys, wine, and whisky, with monthly antiques sales also on offer.

Familiar Faces and New Leadership

Barbara Kirk, the previous owner of The Harbour Saleroom, has retired but will stay on as an independent consultant for Hansons Cornwall. Charles expressed his delight at having Barbara’s expertise on board, saying, “Though Barbara chose to close her saleroom due to retirement, I’m thrilled to say she will be supporting Hansons Cornwall.”

Darren Ashley, who Charles described as “an old and trusted friend and professional colleague,” will lead the saleroom as associate director and head of Asian sales. Darren will be supported by Rob Bolton, auctioneer and valuer, Claire Govier as office manager, and Carrie Edmunds, who will oversee photography and social media.

What to Expect

The new saleroom promises to bring Hansons’ expertise and global reach to Cornwall. “Hansons is renowned for achieving record prices for clients and making global headlines with its finds,” said Darren.

The first two-day auction of 2025 is already planned, with antiques, coins, medals, and toys going under the hammer on 4th March, followed by Asian and Islamic objects and rugs on 5th March.

Community Engagement

In addition to in-house consignment and valuations, Hansons Cornwall will host community valuation events to make professional advice easily accessible.

The saleroom, located at Trinity House, The Quay, Penzance TR18 4BN, is already accepting enquiries ahead of its official launch.
