On Monday, March 4, 2024, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will mark a significant milestone in its history, commemorating 200 years of dedicated lifesaving efforts. Since its inception in 1824, the RNLI has been instrumental in saving over 144,000 lives, a testament to the bravery and commitment of its volunteers and supporters, collectively known as the One Crew.

In honour of this bicentennial celebration, the RNLI has organised a special Thanksgiving Service at Westminster Abbey. The event is scheduled to coincide with the exact time the RNLI’s founding documents were signed two centuries ago, reflecting on the institution’s enduring legacy and its vision for the future. An RNLI representative from every community has been invited to attend, symbolising the unity and collective spirit that has been a hallmark of the organisation’s success.

The service, a collaborative effort between the RNLI and Westminster Abbey, is designed to honour the past, celebrate the present, and inspire future generations of lifesavers. It will feature moments that represent all RNLI regions and countries, showcasing the diverse community that constitutes the One Crew. Attendees and viewers can expect to be moved by special readings and poems that narrate the heroic story of lifesaving over the years.

For those unable to attend in person, the RNLI extends an invitation to join the celebration through a livestream of the service, ensuring that everyone can be a part of this historic occasion. The event will take place between 11:30 am and 12:15 pm, allowing individuals from around the world to witness and participate in the festivities.

The RNLI has also expressed its gratitude for the generous legacy left by Richard Colton, which has significantly contributed to the 200th-anniversary program of events. This milestone not only commemorates two centuries of lifesaving achievements but also reinforces the RNLI’s commitment to saving lives at sea for years to come.
