As the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) celebrates its bicentennial year, the Fowey volunteer lifeboat crew is poised to grace television screens across the nation.
They will be featured in an episode of the ninth series of the BBC Two and iPlayer programme “Saving Lives at Sea,” scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, at 8 pm.
Celebrating 200 Years of Lifesaving
The RNLI, renowned for its 200 years of lifesaving efforts, has reached an incredible milestone this March. In line with this celebration, “Saving Lives at Sea” showcases the heroic efforts of today’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards. The series provides a unique perspective on dramatic rescues, captured through helmet and boat cameras, including those involving Fowey RNLI. This approach offers viewers a firsthand look at the challenges and successes faced by RNLI lifesavers.
A Glimpse Into a Daring Rescue
The highlighted episode will recount a daring rescue by the Fowey RNLI volunteer crew. Amid rough seas and high winds, the team was dispatched to assist a man with a head injury aboard a 30ft yacht near Polkerris harbour. Due to the adverse conditions, a direct transfer of crew to the yacht was impossible, prompting the innovative use of a grappling hook to secure the vessel. With the yacht safely towed away from danger, a coastguard helicopter was called to airlift the injured man to safety, while the lifeboat returned the yacht to Fowey Harbour.
Jonathan Pritchard, the Coxswain of the Fowey lifeboat, praised the team’s effort and coordination under challenging circumstances. His reflection on the operation highlights the spirit of teamwork and determination that defines the RNLI.
A Rich History of Service
Fowey RNLI has a storied past, marking 165 years of service this year. Originally based in Polkerris, where the rescue featured in the programme occurred, the station has been an integral part of the community since 1859. The station’s foundation was spurred by a tragic incident, leading to the establishment of a lifesaving beacon in the area, further cementing the RNLI’s presence and commitment to saving lives.
Tune in to Witness Heroism at Sea
“Saving Lives at Sea” airs on Tuesdays at 8 pm on BBC Two and iPlayer. The episode featuring Fowey RNLI promises to be a captivating portrayal of the courage and teamwork intrinsic to the RNLI’s operations. Viewers are encouraged to tune in and witness the remarkable efforts of those who stand ready to respond to emergencies at sea. The Fowey episode will be available for viewing at BBC Programmes.
