About Towan Beach

The iconic 'Island House,' also known as Jago's Island among locals, stands prominently on Towan Beach, catching the gaze of all who visit with its unique location on an island accessible only by bridge; steeped in history since its construction in 1901, it has been owned by notable figures like Alexander Lodge, inventor of the spark plug, who hosted esteemed guests including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, and now serves as a luxurious holiday rental available for weekly stays, while at low tide, the beach extends to connect with Great Western, Tolcarne, and Lusty Glaze, stretching over two miles, though at high tide, Towan surrenders to the sea, flanked by a promenade leading to the clifftop lawns of Killacourt, boasting a range of facilities nearby and offering accessibility support through initiatives like the sand chair hire scheme and lifeguard services throughout the summer months.

Towan Beach presents an idyllic setting for swimming, particularly on serene days; nevertheless, it's paramount to evaluate the prevailing conditions prior to taking the plunge. Enhance safety measures by opting for group or paired swims and ensuring visibility within the lifeguards' purview.

Towan Beach offers prime conditions for surfing, especially on days with favorable weather. However, it's crucial to assess the current surf conditions before hitting the waves. For heightened safety, consider surfing in pairs or groups and ensure you remain within sight of the lifeguards.

Toilets at Towan Beach are near the harbour, and further facilities are conveniently located closer to the town centre; please note that the facilities close at dusk.

Explore the wonders of marine life with your family at Towan Beach, where vibrant rockpools teeming with creatures await discovery; revealed at low tide, these captivating pools harbour an array of inhabitants, from playful crabs to elusive prawns, and, occasionally, even curious fish or two, nestled along both the left and right sides of the beach.

For an optimal experience, plan your visit to Towan Beach during low tide when the expansive stretch of sand emerges, ideal for family enjoyment; explore the quieter rear section of the beach, where hidden rock pools teem with fascinating marine life, adding an extra dimension to your coastal adventure.

During high tide, Towan Beach may be completely submerged, emphasising the importance of checking tide times beforehand; typically, Cornwall experiences tides ranging from 5.2m to 5.7m, but during larger tides, particularly spring tides, Towan Beach can pose increased hazards, especially when combined with larger waves, underscoring the need for caution and vigilance when visiting.
