LEGO Obsession: Writer From Liskeard Builds Cabin to House Massive Collection

For many, LEGO bricks are a cherished childhood memory. However, for James Bruce, a 42-year-old writer from Liskeard, Cornwall, LEGO has transcended its role as a simple toy to become a significant part of his adult life.

James’s journey back into the world of LEGO began when he introduced the building blocks to his young son. What started as a nostalgic activity soon transformed into a full-blown passion.

From Childhood Hobby to Adult Passion

James’s love for LEGO began in his early years, growing his collection from sets received as Christmas gifts. “I was really into collecting LEGO as a child,” James recalled. “I have fond memories of playing with my pirate-themed sets and city builds every Christmas.” Thanks to his parents, who preserved his collection in their loft, James was reunited with his beloved bricks 25 years later.

His rekindled interest was sparked when he introduced LEGO to his son at the age of six. “Something sparked within me,” he said, “and I decided to build him a table to create his own town.” However, James soon realised he was not comfortable with his son breaking up his cherished sets. This led him to start his own collection that his son couldn’t touch.

Creating a LEGO Haven

James’s expanding collection quickly took over the living room, prompting his wife to issue a “LEGO eviction notice.” This led to a creative solution: he bought a small cabin, dubbed the “Brickand,” and built it in his garden to house his vast collection. The most expensive set he owns is the “Welcome to Apocalypseburg” from the LEGO Movie 2 series, which cost him over £400.

The cabin is meticulously organised with custom-built shelving, dividing his collection into various themed zones. James enjoys integrating his LEGO sets into dynamic scenes, bringing them to life. “I don’t want my LEGO to sit there and do nothing on the shelf; they’re designed to be played with after all,” he explained.

Family Bonding Through Bricks

James’s new-found love for LEGO has fostered quality family time. He, his wife, and his son spend hours building new sets and creating unique structures from bulk buys. “Building LEGO together is one of my family’s favourite activities,” James said. “My wife loves to sort the bricks, my son builds random creations, and I figure out what sets the bricks originally came from.”

LEGO’s Impact on Mental Wellbeing

Beyond the joy of building, LEGO has positively impacted James’s mental wellbeing. He finds the physicality of building cathartic and enjoys the sense of achievement that comes with completing a set. The hands-on activity helps reduce stress and provides a break from the digital world.

Studies support James’s experience, showing that playing with LEGO can lower stress levels, improve sleep quality, and increase happiness by triggering the release of dopamine. Additionally, creative play can aid relaxation and enhance social connections.

LEGO: More Than Just a Toy

James’s story highlights the broader appeal of LEGO beyond childhood. For many adults, it offers a creative outlet and a means to unwind. Whether building intricate models like the 7500-piece Millennium Falcon or simply enjoying the process of creating, LEGO continues to bring joy and numerous benefits to its enthusiasts.

LEGO’s resurgence in popularity among adults is evident with over 140 sets aimed at collectors over the age of 18. As more detailed and intricate sets hit the market, LEGO is proving to be a timeless hobby that transcends age. Collaborative play is especially beneficial if you have children too, helping to strengthen bonds between parent and child, but also teaching valuable social and communication skills in the process.

Madbricks and the LEGO Community

James shared his LEGO journey with online LEGO retailer Madbricks, where he discussed the importance of LEGO in his life. His story is a testament to how adult fans of LEGO can find joy and relaxation through this beloved hobby, with retailers like Madbricks providing the sets and pieces that fuel their passion.

A Lifelong Passion and Source of Joy

James Bruce’s journey with LEGO illustrates the enduring appeal and benefits of this beloved toy. From creating a dedicated space for his collection to enjoying family bonding time, LEGO has become an integral part of his life. For those looking to rediscover the joy of play, James’s story is an inspiring testament to the power of LEGO to bring happiness and improve mental wellbeing.
