Yacht BBQ Sparks Emergency Response in Falmouth Harbour
A reported fire aboard a vessel in Falmouth Harbour prompted an emergency response late on Friday night, 9th August 2024. The Falmouth Lifeboat crew was called into action after HM Coastguard received alarming reports of a vessel on fire near Mulberry Quay.
The alert was raised at 10:32 pm, and within minutes, the Severn Class lifeboat ‘Richard Cox Scott’ was launched into calm waters at 10:45 pm, equipped with firefighting equipment, a salvage pump, and powerful searchlights. The urgency of the situation saw the lifeboat arrive at Prince of Wales Pier just six minutes later.
Swift Response Uncovers BBQ Bonfire
Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew began a systematic search of the area. Their investigation quickly led them to a yacht, where the occupants informed them that they had recently had a barbeque on board. This information was promptly passed to the Coastguard, clarifying the situation.
False Alarm with Good Intent
After confirming that there was no fire, the lifeboat was stood down at 11:18 pm and returned to the station at 11:26 pm. Despite the false alarm, the Falmouth Lifeboat team emphasised the importance of vigilance at sea, encouraging the public to report any unusual sightings to the Coastguard without hesitation.
This incident serves as a reminder of the crucial role that lifeboat services play in ensuring the safety of those at sea. The public can support the Falmouth Lifeboat through donations via JustGiving, helping to fund these vital rescue missions.
This story highlights the quick response of Falmouth’s emergency services and the importance of maintaining caution and preparedness in all maritime activities.
