Celebrate 200 Years of RNLI at The Lizard’s Epic Sea Shanty Festival

Published On: 2 September 2024Last Updated: 2 September 2024By

The much-anticipated Lizard Sea Shanty Festival is back, and this year promises to be a spectacular event as it honours 200 years of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) saving lives at sea. Set against the stunning backdrop of The Lizard, this festival, hosted at the Top House Inn, will kick off on Friday night and continue through Saturday, with a packed schedule of performances, food, and festivities.

A Star-Studded Lineup and Cornish Royalty

This year’s festival will feature 17 of Cornwall’s finest sea shanty performers, including beloved acts such as The Oggymen, Lemonaires, Odds ‘n’ Sods, The Press Gang, and True Foxes. These groups are sure to deliver an unforgettable experience for all who attend.

In a nod to the significance of the occasion, the festival has secured a special guest, described only as “Cornish royalty.” Harry Glasson, a Cornish legend known for his evocative song “Cornwall My Home,” will officially open the festival on Saturday at noon with a performance that is sure to set the tone for a memorable weekend.

Food, Fun, and Fundraising for a Noble Cause

Festivalgoers can indulge in a variety of food options, including a BBQ on Friday and a Hog Roast on Saturday, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to support the RNLI Lizard Lifeboat Station. Alongside the musical entertainment, there will be a grand raffle with exciting prizes, such as hampers, vouchers, and cash, as well as the ever-popular “June’s tombola.” Local community stalls will also be present, adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.

Supporting the RNLI

While the festival is free to attend, organisers are encouraging donations to support the RNLI Lizard Lifeboat Station. Every contribution will help ensure that the RNLI can continue their vital life-saving work for another 200 years.

Tina Searle, one of the festival organisers, expressed her excitement, stating, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy incredible music, and show their support for a local charity.”
