Tesco Confirmed as Supermarket Partner for Nansledan’s Market Street
The Duchy of Cornwall has announced significant progress in the development of Market Street, the vibrant high street at the heart of Nansledan near Newquay. Tesco has been confirmed as the supermarket partner for the project, with phase one construction set to begin early next year.
A New Hub for North Cornwall
Market Street aims to become a year-round destination for local residents, visitors, and the wider North Cornwall area. Plans include a blend of independent artisan shops, cafés, restaurants, offices, co-working spaces, and a Market Hall showcasing Cornwall’s best street food vendors.
The Market Hall will feature communal dining on the ground floor, with flexible office and creative studio spaces above. The 7,000 sq m (75,000 sq ft) construction project will centre around a public courtyard designed for outdoor dining and community events, such as farmers’ markets and fairs.
Tesco’s Role in Market Street
The new Tesco store will occupy a footprint of 2,283 sq m (24,500 sq ft) and is expected to create approximately 100 jobs. It will provide a range of food and non-food goods, including clothing, and offer a Click+Collect service. Work on the supermarket will begin first, followed by the Market Hall and initial retail and café spaces.
Sam Kirkness, Nansledan Development Manager at the Duchy of Cornwall, said:
“We’re delighted to have secured Tesco as part of Market Street’s exciting and diverse retail offer and are hugely encouraged by the number of direct approaches so far from local established businesses, independents and start-ups, all interested in becoming part of a modern-day high street and lifestyle destination for North Cornwall.”
Marcus Vinnicombe, Property Acquisitions & Disposals Director at Tesco, added:
“We are excited to be working with the Duchy of Cornwall to deliver a new Tesco supermarket in Nansledan. This store will offer a range of food and non-food goods, such as clothing, as well as provide a Click+Collect service, and we anticipate it will create around 100 new jobs.”
Opportunities for Local Businesses
Nansledan’s Market Street will also provide a range of opportunities for businesses, with units ranging from small start-up spaces of 23 sq m (250 sq ft) to larger spaces up to 370 sq m (4,000 sq ft). All units will be built to high sustainability standards and offered under a variety of lease terms.
The development, which already includes 810 completed homes and around 40 businesses, is part of the long-term plan to build a total of 4,000 homes in the area. Interested businesses can find more information via the Nansledan website at https://nansledan.com/market-street/.
Timeline for Completion
Construction of phase one is on track to begin early next year, with the first buildings expected to be ready for occupation by 2026. Work on the Tesco store will be prioritised, followed closely by the Market Hall and other retail and café spaces.
This development is set to transform Nansledan into a bustling destination for work, shopping, and leisure, boosting the local economy and creating numerous job opportunities.
