St Petrocs’ Powerful New Podcast Brings the Harsh Realities of Homelessness to Light

Published On: 23 December 2024Last Updated: 23 December 2024By

Led by those who know it best, this podcast offers a raw and heartfelt glimpse into the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness in Cornwall.

A Platform for Lived Experience

As part of their ongoing Winter Appeal, St Petrocs has launched a podcast, No Place to Call Home: A St Petrocs Podcast. This unique project, spearheaded by residents with first-hand experience of homelessness, seeks to raise awareness about the harsh realities of sleeping outside during Cornwall’s coldest months.

Supported by the charity’s Vocational Development Programme, residents collaborated with Screen Skills Cornwall to learn the skills needed to produce a professional podcast. The first episode, led by four St Petrocs residents, sheds light on their experiences and highlights how society can unite to support individuals facing homelessness.

Josie Johnson, Vocational Development Programme Officer, said:
“Creating a podcast has been such a positive experience for our residents involved, as it has given them a space to be able to take control and share their thoughts on their experiences. It has brought excitement and passion into a project that residents and staff can work on together. Everyone involved has put so much hard work and effort into the podcast. I am very, very proud of all involved.”

Raising Awareness and Challenging Stereotypes

Natalie, one of the residents hosting the podcast, expressed the impact of the project:
“I’m so proud of this podcast, I feel that it’s highlighting so many issues in an accessible way. It has been eye-opening to hear the impact of St Petrocs Winter Services. My biggest hope for the podcast is that it helps listeners really understand our message, that kindness costs nothing. Long term, I hope that we achieve our goal in removing stereotypes and start building a kinder, fairer mindset in the world.”

The podcast, which is available on Spotify, YouTube, and other platforms, aims to inform and inspire listeners to take action in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness.

Critical Support Through St Petrocs’ Winter Services

The podcast aligns with St Petrocs’ Winter Appeal, which seeks donations to provide immediate shelter and support to people in need. Contributions to the appeal can help offer a safe, warm place and vital life-changing assistance for those facing another cold night outside.
