Final Stages: New A30 Openings and Overnight Closures Announced
Work on the A30 upgrade between Chiverton and Carland Cross is nearing completion, with new openings and road closures set to take place in the coming weeks. National Highways has confirmed key updates on the project, including the completion of local roads and overnight closures for final verge and telecommunications work.
New B3288 Set to Open Near Zelah
As part of the ongoing improvements, the old A30 near Zelah is being completed and will open as the new B3288 between Chybucca and Boxheater over the weekend of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March. This change is part of the wider effort to integrate local road connections with the newly upgraded A30 dual carriageway.
Overnight A30 Closures Planned
Drivers should be aware of overnight closures on the A30 between Chiverton and Mitchell from Monday 17th to Friday 21st February. The closures will be in effect from 8pm to 6am each night, allowing National Highways to complete verge work and upgrade telecommunications infrastructure. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place via the A3076 and A3075.
Further Closure of the Old A30 from 3rd March
Following the opening of the B3288, the old, realigned A30 between Carland Cross and Boxheater will be closed from Monday 3rd March for four weeks before reopening as a new section of the B3285.
This closure is necessary to complete work on a multi-species tunnel and to finalise connections between sections of the old A30. During this time, drivers can access the A30 via the B3285, A3075 and A3076.
Final Stages of the Project Underway
National Highways’ Programme Manager for the A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme, Andrew Alcorn, highlighted the positive impact of the dual carriageway since its opening last June.
“Opening the new dual carriageway has made a significant and positive difference to the journeys of both local communities and businesses, and to the wider travelling public, and we’re now moving towards completing the scheme as a whole.
“Traffic is now running smoothly on the new dual carriageway, we’re also progressing a significant amount of ancillary work, and while we progress towards completion, we thank people in advance for their co-operation and patience, and advise people to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys.”
Carland Cross Junction Work Continues
Work on the Carland Cross junction is also ongoing, with temporary overnight traffic lights and closures in place over the coming weeks. Westbound lane closures on the A30 will continue until March as finishing work on the verges is completed.

The A30 upgrade has been made possible through an £8 million contribution from the European Regional Development Fund, with an additional £12 million for construction. The remainder of the project costs have been funded by central Government.
