Solar Power Surge: What’s Happening Just Outside This Cornish Country Club?
China Fleet Country Club completes 600kW solar array with UK Shared Prosperity Fund support
China Fleet Country Club has unveiled a major step in its journey towards Net Zero with the completion of a new 600kW ground-mounted solar array—located over a kilometre away from its main site near Saltash.
The installation, developed in partnership with renewable energy specialists ZLC Energy, has been funded with £260,000 from the UK Government via the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Shared Prosperity Fund, aimed at supporting local sustainability.
“This builds on the success of our existing 400kW solar installation on the roofs of our buildings, which already provides a substantial portion of our energy needs,” said Dean Bennett, Managing Director at China Fleet Country Club. “Together, these solar arrays will further reduce the Club’s reliance on non-renewable energy, positioning us at the forefront of sustainable business operations in the region.”
A Long-Standing Commitment to Green Practices
Sustainability has been central to China Fleet’s operations for years. The club has implemented a wide range of eco-conscious features including energy-efficient lighting, an on-site water supply and treatment plant, and ongoing efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling.
The newly installed solar array now joins their existing 400kW rooftop system, enhancing the club’s renewable energy capabilities even further.
“Sustainability has always been at the heart of our values,” said Gordon Hannah, CEO of the China Fleet Trust. “With the addition of this 600kW solar array, alongside our existing 400kW system, we are demonstrating how businesses can embrace renewable energy and sustainable practices to create a lasting, positive impact on the environment.”
“The solar array will not only support our operational energy needs,” continued Gordon, “but will also inspire our members, visitors, and the wider community to adopt greener energy solutions and take part in shaping a more sustainable future.”
A Trusted Leisure Destination with Naval Roots
Originally founded over 30 years ago to support Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel, China Fleet Country Club has grown into a well-known leisure destination in Cornwall. It now features a championship golf course, modern fitness centre, beauty and health facilities, accommodation, and various dining options.
The club’s green achievements have been recognised with multiple awards, including the prestigious Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) Gold Award.
The new solar array is now fully operational.
