Mystery Art Auction Could Change Lives: Cornwall Museum’s Unique Exhibition Opens This Month
Over 60 local artists unite to support Dementia Programme with anonymous postcard auction
An extraordinary exhibition with a powerful purpose is set to open at Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery this month, as more than 60 local artists lend their talent to raise vital funds for the museum’s Dementia Programme.
The Here and Now exhibition will run from 24th May to 21st June, showcasing postcard-sized artworks generously donated by artists across the region. What makes this exhibition special is the anonymity of each piece — the names behind the artworks will remain secret until they are sold via an online auction.
A chance to own original art while supporting the community
The online auction will take place between 6th and 20th June, giving art lovers and supporters a chance to bid for the unique pieces. Once the auction concludes, the identities of the artists will be revealed and the artworks will find new homes.
All proceeds from the auction will directly support and expand the museum’s Dementia Programme, which is centred around its popular Monday Museum Club.
Supporting people living with dementia
The Monday Museum Club is specially designed for people with mild to moderate dementia. Developed in partnership with Memory Matters, the club offers activities and discussions based on historical collections, helping participants to nurture connection, independence, and a sense of personal identity.
Since launching in 2022, two groups have been running, with demand so high there is already a waiting list. According to the museum, £4,000 would fund one group for a year, while £8,000 would keep both running — a target they hope to achieve with support from the auction.
“A great fun exhibition and auction”
Museum Co-Director Bryony Robins said the diversity and originality of the submitted artworks has been fascinating to see:
“We were fascinated to see the diversity and originality of the artwork submitted for the Here & Now charity auction. We are deeply grateful to the artists who have chosen to support the work the museum is doing for people living with dementia, and for making this exciting exhibition possible. This charity auction and exhibition will be unmissable and great fun – it’s an opportunity to purchase original and unique artworks, so do dig deep if you can.”
Bryony added:
“By helping people connect through art and artefacts, we are playing an important health and wellbeing role in the community. However, we can’t do it alone, and this auction is just one of many innovative ways we’re raising funds for projects which make a real difference to people’s lives.”
Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery — at the heart of Truro
Located in the centre of Truro, Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery offers an ever-changing programme of exhibitions alongside its permanent collections, celebrating Cornwall’s rich heritage. The museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, with annual passes priced at £10 and free entry for under 18s.
In January 2024, the museum began a major transformation project funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Cornwall Council, Truro Town Deal, and Arts Council England. The work aims to improve accessibility, protect collections and create a more engaging visitor experience.
The latest phase of the project received £2.3 million from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, funded by the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. For more on the programme, visit UK Government UK Shared Prosperity Fund Prospectus.
