Martin Barlow steps down after five years as Chair
Children’s Sailing Trust, based near Helston, has announced a major change in leadership. After five years as Chair of Trustees, Martin Barlow will be stepping down. Martin’s final Management Committee Meeting took place on 10th June, with a three-month handover period now underway.
Martin has been involved with the Trust for many years, starting as a Parent Sailing Co-ordinator for Mawnan Smith School before becoming a Trustee and then Chair. Under his leadership, the charity has grown its reach, offering life-changing sailing opportunities to hundreds of children, including those with additional needs.
Chief Executive Jakie Jewell said:
“We are incredibly grateful to Martin for his years of passionate service and steady leadership. His legacy will continue to shape our future, and we look forward to building on that foundation with James.”
James Staughton to take over as Chair in June 2025
Following a unanimous vote by the Board, current Trustee James Staughton OBE DL has been named the new Chair of Trustees. He will take on the role fully from June 2025 after the transition period.
James is well known in Cornwall, having previously served as Chief Executive of St Austell Brewery and as its Honorary President for the past five years. He also chairs the Cornwall Place Board and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall. He is recognised for his involvement in economic development and his support of Cornwall’s cultural identity.
Speaking about his new role, James said:
“I am honoured to take on the position of Chair of Trustees for Children’s Sailing Trust. The work CST does to support young people through access to sailing and watersports – particularly those with limited opportunities – is inspirational. I look forward to supporting the team in expanding this vital mission.”
The Trust says it is confident that James’s leadership will guide it into a strong and sustainable future.
