Fiona Loveday Returns to Cornwall with Wicked Watercolours Classes
Fiona Loveday launches Westcountry-wide watercolour classes with a twist
After more than 20 years of turning tradition on its head, Cornish artist Fiona Loveday is back in her home county and inviting others to join her in making mischief with pure watercolours. Her unique style, known as Wicked Watercolours, has now found its way to Falmouth with plans to expand across Cornwall this autumn.
Breaking Old Rules Without Breaking the Medium
Fiona first began experimenting with watercolours in a Scout Hall in Welwyn, South Hertfordshire, where she and her students rebelled against traditional methods while still remaining loyal to the medium. “If it doesn’t say Watercolour on the label, we won’t use it,” she said.
Now, with a wealth of original materials, quirky teaching methods, and a fresh energy, she’s setting up ‘Wicked Watercolours, Westcountry’ to bring that same rebellious spirit to Cornwall. Her new classes are open to aspiring artists from all over the county.
A Cornish Return
Originally from Par and schooled at St Austell Grammar, Fiona says she’s embracing her Cornish roots fully again, even reverting to her ‘proper’ Cornish name. “My vision is for a few different groups around the County, almost a Watercolour Academy, learning and practising our very special Wicked Watercolour methods,” she said.
Having taught seven classes a week in the past, Fiona has built a huge catalogue of custom materials that she says nobody else uses or teaches in quite the same way.
What to Expect
The upcoming autumn term starts on Saturday 5th September and runs until 17th October, with classes held from 10.30am to 1.00pm. Each term is priced at £94.50, with a maximum of 20 people per class.
Every week includes a themed ‘Prep Sheet’ explaining the subject, composition ideas, materials needed and guidance on finishing and presenting the artwork. From beginner-friendly ‘flat and graduating washes’ to the more daring ‘Stretching Out’ challenges, the sessions are designed to help students build confidence and skill through a clearly planned programme.
Fiona also brings along quality materials for sale to help simplify the process, saying her Starter Packs are ideal for nervous newcomers. “Do try to resist the temptation of that ‘oh, so cheap ‘Amerrrson’ set….” she adds.
Venues Wanted
Fiona is currently finalising class locations and would love to hear from anyone who can recommend suitable spaces around Cornwall. “Any other empty Hall with parking, tables and chairs, kitchen and good light, that are free in term-time days for regular weekly classes, workshops and possible weekend exhibitions will be considered.”
