Fowey RNLI volunteers were launched on consecutive days last week after two boats reported engine failure, leaving them unable to return to harbour without assistance.

Yacht stranded during regatta week

On Wednesday 20th August, during Fowey's busy sailing regatta week, Falmouth coastguard requested the launch of Fowey's Atlantic 85 lifeboat to assist a 47-foot yacht. The vessel was stuck a mile outside Fowey Harbour with a broken engine and no wind.

Some of the lifeboat crew had already been out on the water earlier taking part in the regatta, so they were aware of the calm conditions. On reaching the yacht, the crew set up a tow and safely brought it into the harbour, where it was handed over to Fowey Harbour Patrol to complete the mooring.

Fishing boat brought home

The following day, Thursday 21st August, the coastguard requested another launch, this time to assist a 33-foot non-commercial fishing boat with engine failure, located 13 miles offshore with four people onboard.

Once on scene, the crew assessed the situation before deciding to tow the vessel back to Fowey. On arrival in the harbour, the fishing boat was handed over to harbour patrol and secured on its mooring.

Safety advice for boat users

Fowey Lifeboat Operations Manager, Chris Ogg, reminded boat users to take precautions before heading out:

"It is important to ensure that boat engines are well maintained and regularly checked. Always carry enough fuel for your journey and adequate tools and spares. Also make sure that you have a means of calling for help onboard, such as a fully charged mobile and VHF. If you do get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
