Bodmin Railway Team to Tackle Camel Trolley Fundraiser on 5th September
Three members of Bodmin Railway’s team are preparing to swap paperwork for pure grit as they take on a gruelling heritage challenge in September.
On Friday 5th September 2025, Clare, Emma and Lizzie, joined by a driver responsible for the brakes, will attempt to complete 16 round trips between Bodmin General and Walker Lines using the unique Camel hand-propelled trolley. Their goal is to cover 24 miles in total — the equivalent of an All-Line journey on the Bodmin Railway.
All money raised will go directly into improving the visitor experience at the heritage site. Plans include refreshing the Exhibition Coach with new tables and chairs, along with upgrades to Boscarne Junction station and green so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
A Victorian mystery on wheels
The Camel itself is a striking reminder of Victorian design. A four-wheeled, hand-propelled cart, its exact origins remain unknown. Records show it was once used as both a permanent-way and inspection trolley, with links to London & South Western Railway, Southern Railway and British Railways before eventually being preserved.
Today, the Camel is kept at Bodmin General, occasionally brought out for display or use. Despite its charming appearance, operating it is far from easy. Many who have tried confirm that propelling the cart is physically tough work, making the team’s 24-mile target a true test of endurance.
Fundraising with heritage in mind
Explaining why the group chose this challenge, Clare said:
“We wanted to do something both fun and meaningful to help raise funds for the railway. The Camel is part of our heritage, so using it for this challenge feels like a perfect way to highlight the history of the railway while also looking forward to the future.”
The railway is encouraging everyone to head to Bodmin General Station on the day to cheer on the team, enjoy the atmosphere and show support. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, with every donation going directly towards preserving and enhancing Bodmin Railway.
