Annual Newlyn Raft Race Returns with Strong Community Support
Yesterday, Sunday 7th September, the annual Newlyn Raft Race made its return, drawing hundreds of spectators to the shoreline. The event, known for being both competitive and full of fun, was accompanied by a full day of entertainment on Newlyn Green.
Children Lead the Way
The competition began with the children’s race. Victory went to ‘Raft Lauren’, a team made up of sons and daughters of the Penzance Community Fire Station.
Titanic II Claims the Main Prize
In the main event, it was the team from The Red Lion pub who stormed ahead. Their raft, aptly named ‘Titanic II’, took an early lead and managed to hold off strong competition from last year’s winners, ‘HMS Conor’.
Supporting Community Celebrations
The race was organised by Newlyn Harbour Lights, with vital support from Penlee Lifeboat. Proceeds from the event will go towards funding the Christmas Harbour Lights and fireworks display in Newlyn, which has long been supported by Penzance Council.
