Free Community Choirs in St Austell for People Living With Dementia

Published On: 3 October 2025Last Updated: 3 October 2025By

For people living with dementia and those who support them, finding joy and connection can be life-changing. The Forget-me-not Chorus is bringing that experience to St Austell with free community choirs that combine music, movement and friendship.

What the Sessions Offer

Each two-hour session begins with a gentle warm-up before moving into group singing and light movement. There’s also time set aside for tea and chat, making space for people to connect beyond the music.

No previous singing experience is required. All the music is taught by ear and participants are encouraged to take part at their own pace. Family members and friends are invited to sing alongside their loved ones, creating a supportive and uplifting environment.

The Impact on Families

One participant explained:

‘No matter how many hurdles I have to manoeuvre my way through, it is always worth it once my mum and I are at FMNC. It’s the place where I, as my mum’s carer, can communicate my journey with dementia. Both the ups and the downs. We are in the moment. No pressure, just singing. Bliss.’

Another added:

‘As a family, we all came away with a spring in our steps. Everything about FMNC is so joyful.’

The energy in the room is often described as “magical” and the uplifting effects continue long after the session ends for many people involved.

When and Where

The St Austell group meets on alternate Wednesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Mount Charles Church, 49 Victoria Road, St Austell, PL25 4QF.

The sessions are free and open to anyone living with or alongside dementia. No formal diagnosis or referral is required.

Led by St Agnes-based soprano Caroline Childe, the group meets in a fully accessible venue with nearby parking. Although it takes place in a church, the choir is completely non-religious.

Options Beyond Cornwall
