Hannah’s Journey from Launceston to the Royal Navy

Students at Launceston College were inspired this month when former student Hannah Gardner, now a Royal Navy Officer, returned to share her story during a morning assembly.

As part of the college’s “I Love My Job” series, Hannah spoke to Year 7 students about her journey from Launceston College to a successful career in the Royal Navy. Her talk encouraged students to dream big and consider exciting futures beyond the classroom.

Guidance for Future Recruits

After the assembly, Hannah met with Year 11 and 13 students who are interested in careers in the armed forces. She offered insights into life in the Royal Navy and discussed the steps she took to reach her position.

Launceston College, part of Athena Learning Trust, plans to continue hosting sessions like this one and welcomes other professionals to take part. Those interested in sharing their own career journeys can contact the college at dacaster@launcestoncollege.uk.

Preparing Students for Their Futures

The college’s careers education programme helps students identify their strengths and explore local and national career opportunities. From early awareness of individual skills to work experience placements, CV writing, and one-to-one guidance, the programme equips students with the confidence and practical knowledge to make informed choices about their futures.

Principal’s Praise

Mr Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:

“We were delighted to welcome Hannah back to Launceston College. Her story is a brilliant example of how dedication, ambition, and resilience can lead to an exciting career. Hearing directly from someone who has walked these halls and gone on to achieve so much is incredibly motivating for our students, inspiring them to dream big and explore the many opportunities open to them.”

Ofsted Recognition

Launceston College is rated Good by Ofsted across all key areas, including Quality of Education, Behaviour and Attitudes, Personal Development, Leadership and Management, and Sixth Form provision. Inspectors noted that pupils, including those with SEND, follow a broad and ambitious curriculum designed to build knowledge logically and prepare students for their aspirations.

Students in the sixth form study for qualifications matched to their future goals, with work described as suitably demanding. Pupils attending the specially resourced provision also follow a curriculum that meets their needs and capabilities.
