How Newquay AFC Is Turning Sunshine into Savings at Mount Wise Stadium

A Major Step Towards a Greener Future

Newquay AFC has taken a big stride towards sustainability with the installation of 27 solar panels and 37.5kW of battery storage at Mount Wise Stadium. The system allows the club to run on clean, renewable energy while exporting surplus electricity back to the National Grid.

The project was made possible thanks to funding from the Community Levelling Up Programme via Cornwall Council, part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The programme forms part of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, supporting projects that make a lasting difference in local communities.

Partnerships Driving Positive Change

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme said:

“We’re proud to support the long-term sustainability of this valued community hub. Newquay AFC’s deep-rooted commitment to its local community reflects the spirit of the Community Levelling Up Programme – ensuring neighbourhood assets deliver lasting benefits for local people.”

The funding has already had an impact, helping the club cut energy costs and reinvest those savings into football development, community engagement, and ongoing facility improvements.

Local Businesses Leading the Way

A huge part of the project’s success has been the contribution from Cornish renewable energy specialists Harvest Cornwall. The family-run company supported the club from the initial system design through to installation and aftercare.

Jonathan Coyle, Director of Harvest Cornwall, said:

“We’re delighted to have been selected and worked with Newquay AFC to bring renewable energy to the heart of the community. As a Cornish family business, Harvest Cornwall is committed to helping clubs and charities become more sustainable, reduce costs, and rely less on fossil fuels.”

Leadership on and off the Pitch

Alan Lenton, Chairman of Newquay AFC, said:

“This latest development is another fantastic step forward for Newquay AFC, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’re achieving as a club. The installation of solar panels and battery storage isn’t just about saving on energy costs – it’s about showing real leadership in sustainability and investing in the long-term future of both the club and our community.

There’s a real buzz and positive energy around Newquay AFC right now. From improvements to our facilities to progress on the pitch and new community initiatives, everything we’re doing is driven by the same goal – to make this club the best it can be for our players, supporters, and the town we represent.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the Community Levelling Up Programme via Cornwall Council and the excellent partnership we’ve built with Harvest Cornwall. Collaborations like these truly make a difference to grassroots clubs like ours – helping us grow sustainably, reduce our environmental impact, and even contribute renewable energy back to the grid.

Projects like this demonstrate that Newquay AFC is serious about building something lasting – a club that’s modern, forward-thinking, and deeply connected to its community. I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this possible, including Cornwall Council, Harvest Cornwall, and our fantastic volunteers and supporters who make Newquay AFC what it is today.”

Supporting the Grassroots Football Community

Recognised by both the Cornwall FA and The FA as a Thriving Club, Newquay AFC continues to prioritise growth, sustainability, and community impact. The club is encouraging other football clubs interested in making the switch to renewable energy to get in touch to learn about their setup, funding process, and suppliers.

Newquay AFC remains committed to investing in its facilities, people, and planet, strengthening its place at the heart of the Newquay community.
