First Affordable Homes Completed in Bude, but What Makes Them Stand Out?
Legacy Properties has completed the first affordable homes at its Upton Green development in Bude, marking a major step for the scheme and for Westward Housing.
First Wheelchair Accessible Homes Completed
The first handovers include two purpose-built wheelchair accessible bungalows. They feature adjustable multi use kitchens, accessible wet rooms, ramped access and fixtures installed at wheelchair friendly heights. The aim is to support full independence for the new residents.
These homes are part of 13 affordable units being delivered to Westward Housing for people in Bude who urgently need affordable housing. The full mix includes one, two and three bedroom apartments, bungalows and houses for affordable rent and shared ownership.
It is the fourth collaboration between Legacy and Westward Housing after earlier partnerships at Halwyn Meadows in Crantock, Highfields in Cubert and The Grange in Goonhavern.
A First for Legacy Properties
This is the first time Cornish housebuilder Legacy Properties has completed homes designed specifically for full wheelchair use.
Nick Long, Managing Director at Legacy Properties, said: “This is a proud moment for everyone at Legacy. The handover of the first affordable homes at Upton Green, including Legacy’s first purpose-built wheelchair-accessible properties, reflects both our technical capability and our commitment to inclusive design.
“Working in partnership with Westward Housing, we’ve delivered homes that meet real community need, from bespoke accessible bungalows to sustainable family housing. Upton Green has already captured huge interest for its design, quality and location, and these affordable homes are an integral part of that story.”
Westward Housing Welcomes the Handover
Stephen Lodge, CEO for Westward Housing, added: “We are delighted to take handover of the first affordable homes at Upton Green, including two fully wheelchair-accessible bungalows designed for local families. These homes will make a tangible difference to people’s lives in Bude, providing safe, modern and inclusive spaces where individuals and families can thrive.”
High Demand for the Coastal Development
The handover comes during strong demand for homes at Upton Green. More than half of the open market properties were reserved within weeks of the launch earlier this summer.
Upton Green features 25 energy efficient homes, 500 metres from Bude’s North Cornwall coastline. The development brings together open market and affordable homes built with sustainability in mind, including air source heat pumps, solar panels and thermally efficient materials.
Further affordable home handovers are planned later this year. The remaining homes are expected to complete in December 2025 and February 2026.
