Egloskerry Pupils Take Part in Cornish Pirates Sustainability Challenge

Published On: 21 November 2025Last Updated: 21 November 2025By

Pupils at Egloskerry Primary School have taken their first steps towards creating a greener future after an inspiring visit from Cornish Pirates coach Neil, who introduced the Cornish Pirates Sustainability Challenge.

Thinking Big About the Planet

The challenge encouraged children to look at how they can make their school and community more environmentally friendly. During the session, the pupils impressed Neil with their enthusiasm and their knowledge of issues like recycling, reducing waste, protecting wildlife and saving energy.

Both Egloskerry Primary School and Altarnun Primary School, which are part of Athena Learning Trust, are now getting stuck into the work. Following the visit, pupils at Egloskerry are creating their own sustainability action plan based on the ideas they explored during the challenge.

Cornish Pirates Encouraging Change

The Cornish Pirates Sustainability Challenge forms part of the club’s wider commitment to promoting environmental awareness and community engagement across Cornwall. This includes the reusable cups used at matches, which help raise money for Cash for Kids, along with sessions like this one that aim to get young people thinking about how they can make a difference.

A Positive Impact in the Classroom

Lynsey Slater, Principal at Launceston Primary School, said:

“We were thrilled to welcome Neil from the Cornish Pirates and to see how passionate our pupils are about protecting the environment. The Sustainability Challenge has really inspired them to think about the difference they can make, both in school and beyond.”

Strong Ofsted Praise for Egloskerry

Egloskerry Primary School is rated Good by Ofsted for the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes and early years provision, and Outstanding for personal development and leadership and management.

Inspectors highlighted that pupils are very proud of their school, feel well cared for, understand the high expectations set by teachers and leaders, and are ambitious and confident.
