NHS Cornwall’s Deborah O’Nyons Shortlisted for Diversity and Equality Award
Deborah O’Nyons Reaches the Finals Again
One finalist in this year’s West Country Women Awards is hoping it might finally be third time lucky. Deborah O’Nyons from NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board has been nominated for the third year running, having previously reached the quarter finals.
The Awards celebrate women across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset who are making a positive impact in their communities.
This year Deborah has been shortlisted in the Diversity and Equality category for her work on improving healthcare for women and reducing health inequalities.
Driving Change in Women’s Health
According to the release, Deborah’s work has helped Cornwall lead the way with a practical approach to tackling long-standing issues including diagnostic delays and misdiagnosis in women, covering conditions from endometriosis to cardiovascular symptoms.
Progress highlighted under her leadership includes:
• developing a county wide Women’s Health Strategy
• creating women’s health hubs with extended appointments
• providing targeted support for women facing the greatest barriers, including those affected by domestic or sexual violence, women with learning disabilities, refugees, and women from Gypsy and Traveller communities
Susan Bracefield, Acting Chief Executive of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, says:
“We are fortunate to work with Debbie every day, but you only have to cross paths with her to know how devoted she is to her work and see the difference it’s making for people.
“Over the decades she has dedicated so much to being an advocate for improving health outcomes for our local population. I’m delighted she is being recognised in this way. It’s well deserved and I wish her all the luck for the final.”
A Landmark Conference in Cornwall
Earlier this year, in June, Deborah organised what is described as the first event of its kind in Cornwall, titled ‘The Future of Women’s Health: Access, Equity and Action’. More than 100 invited guests attended, along with keynote speaker Professor Dame Lesley Regan, the Women’s Health Ambassador for England.
Deborah says:
“There are so many people doing fantastic work, it’s a real privilege to be nominated. It’s also incredibly rewarding to know that our efforts to create meaningful change are being recognised and valued – it makes it all the more worthwhile.
“This is not a solo journey, I’m so grateful to be working with a fabulous team of inspirational men and women whose dedication and passion make everything seem possible.”
Deborah does not know who nominated her, as the process is anonymous. With shortlisting judged on applications written by the nominees themselves, reaching the finals is down to her own submission.
Looking Ahead to the Grand Final
The Grand Final Gala for the West Country Women Awards will take place in Plymouth on 28th November 2025. The release offers best wishes to Deborah and the other finalists.
