Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir Performs at Launceston Schools
Launceston College and Launceston Primary were filled with music and colour after a visit from the Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir, who brought Ugandan songs, dance, and drumming to both schools this term.
A Day of Music, Dance and Culture
The choir led interactive sessions that had pupils singing, dancing, and drumming throughout the day. Their energy spread quickly across both schools, with teachers even putting on grass skirts and joining in with the rhythms.
Year 8 students at Launceston College were given an insight into the challenges children in Uganda face when trying to access education. The day finished with a lively concert for students, parents, and carers, where Launceston College pupils joined the choir on stage for a big finale.
Building Global Connections
The choir is touring the UK to raise funds supporting the education, care, and wellbeing of children in their communities in Uganda.
Both schools are part of Athena Learning Trust, which aims to give children opportunities to explore new horizons. Launceston College also has links with Bunjakko Island Vocational School in Uganda. Last year, staff and students travelled there to help with work including painting staff quarters and building additional toilets for pupils.
Reactions from the Schools
Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College, said:
“What a day. We’re so grateful to the Pearl of Africa Choir for everything they brought to our school. Their visit sparked real excitement and curiosity among our students and gave them a deeper understanding of life beyond their own community.”
Kate Eyre, Principal at Launceston Primary School, said:
“The choir’s visit lit up our school. Our pupils really connected with their warmth and energy, and it gave them a meaningful glimpse into life beyond their own community. It’s an experience that will stay with them. Huge thanks to the Pearl of Africa.”
