Cornish Documentary ‘Gentle, Angry Women’ Returns for 2026 Screening

An award winning Cornish film company is marking Women’s History Month with the return of a documentary that revisits one of the largest women led movements in British history.

Awen Productions CIC has announced a new run of screenings for Gentle, Angry Women, following a sold out premiere.

A journey back to Greenham Common

The documentary follows three young women as they retrace the 110 mile march to Greenham Common, forty years after the first Women’s Peace Protests began. The original protest lasted 19 years and became one of the most significant women’s movements in the UK, yet remains unknown to many people today.

Even the film’s director, Barbara Santi, admitted she knew little about the protests before making the film.

“I belong to the generation that should have inherited and passed on these stories, yet failed to do so,” she admits. “I’m working to repair that broken chain of women’s collective memory.”

“Every woman deserves to know her own history – yet an entire generation has been robbed of the knowledge that thousands of women once lived for years in makeshift camps, facing arrest and ridicule to prevent nuclear war.”

Screenings across the South West

After its initial success, the film is returning for a 2026 tour across the South West, with screenings planned in Redruth, Falmouth, Heligan, Penzance, St Just, Bath and Bristol. The tour begins in February and continues throughout Women’s History Month in March.

A dedicated screening will also take place on 8th March to mark International Women’s Day at Newlyn Filmhouse.

Barbara will be attending many of the screenings to host Q&As, alongside guest panels featuring women from the local area.

Young voices at the heart of the film

The film features Evie, 19, from Cornwall, alongside Xanthe, 17, and Poppy, 16, as they walk the route to Greenham Common. Along the way, they meet women who lived at the peace camp and hear first hand accounts of life there, sparking conversations between generations.

The young women are passionate about issues including Black Lives Matter, climate change, women’s rights and animal activism. The documentary creates space for dialogue around these themes, connecting past protests with present day concerns.

Reflecting on the relevance of the film today, the director said:

“In a time when young people are grappling with climate crisis, global conflicts, and technological isolation, they need to see how previous generations of ‘gentle, angry women’ faced seemingly impossible odds and refused to give up.”

Audience reaction and production opportunities

Early audiences have described the documentary as impactful and emotional.

“A really humbling story of collective women’s activism and a roller coaster of emotions for the audience.”

“Powerful, poetic, and unapologetically bold.”

As well as telling the story of Greenham Common, the film also created opportunities for young women behind the camera, supporting them in technical production roles.

Santi said this reflects the message at the heart of the film.

“The film champions small acts of defiance and community building as powerful forms of resistance. At its heart, this is a film about hope – about finding strength in gentle anger and discovering that the most profound changes often begin with the smallest, most personal acts of courage.”
