Spiral UK Becomes Employee Owned Through Ownership Trust

Spiral UK, a Cornwall based manufacturing company, has announced that it has become employee owned through the creation of an Employee Ownership Trust.

The move comes as the business approaches its 40th anniversary in 2025 and follows a decision by Managing Director Eric Nicholls to begin a phased retirement.

A new chapter after 40 years

Founded more than four decades ago, Spiral UK has built its reputation as the UK’s leading bespoke staircase manufacturer, known for quality, reliability and engineering expertise. The company is based in Helston, with an office in Cambridge, and provides an end to end design and manufacturing service to customers across the UK.

The transition to employee ownership was explored by the leadership team as part of planning for the company’s long term future. The Employee Ownership Trust has been set up to protect the culture, independence and values that have shaped the business over the past four decades, while also supporting job security for employees.

Eric said:
“Spiral UK has always been built on the dedication and expertise of its people. Transitioning to employee ownership is a positive step forward, ensuring the long-term strength of the business and allowing those who contribute to its success every day to share directly in that success. As I begin to step back from Spiral UK, the pride I feel is undeniable. The time feels right for me to step back, and guiding the company into this new chapter, leaving it in the capable hands of the people at its heart, gives me complete confidence in its future.”

What employee ownership means in practice

Under the Employee Ownership Trust structure, employees will collectively benefit from a meaningful stake in the future of the business. This includes increased engagement and representation, along with the opportunity to share in profits through tax free bonuses, subject to eligibility.

Day to day management will remain with the existing leadership team, providing continuity for customers, suppliers and partners. Trustees will oversee the Employee Ownership Trust and act in the long term interests of employees.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Holland said:
“As we looked to the next chapter for Spiral UK, employee ownership was the right solution. It provides continuity for our customer and suppliers, while rewarding our employees and safeguarding the long-term strength of the business.”

No change for customers and partners

Spiral UK has confirmed that the transition will be seamless for customers and partners, with no disruption to operations, contracts or service levels.

The announcement comes at a time when employee ownership is continuing to grow across the UK manufacturing sector, where it is increasingly seen as a sustainable way to support business succession, retain skills and build long term resilience.
