Pupils from Egloskerry Primary School, part of Athena Learning Trust, have taken their questions about school food beyond the classroom and straight to Westminster.

From School Meals to Parliament

The children have been learning where their school food comes from and how supply chains work. As part of this work, they researched school meals and decided to write directly to Ben Maguire, sharing their questions and ideas about healthy and sustainable food in schools.

Each pupil received a personal reply. Ben praised the thoughtfulness of their letters and the research behind them. He also highlighted the importance of healthy and sustainable food in schools and explained ways young people can have a say in what they eat. This included plans around nutrition, sustainability and clear eco labelling.

Learning How Policy Shapes Food Choices

The exchange gave pupils a first hand look at how national policy can influence school food. It encouraged them to think critically about sustainability, nutrition and the wider impact of the choices they make about what they eat.

Part of a Wider Focus at Egloskerry

The work forms part of Egloskerry’s wider focus on global awareness, responsible citizenship and caring for the environment. Through Geography and PSHE lessons, pupils are encouraged to explore local and global issues, understand how their choices have an impact, and think critically about sustainability, social justice and healthy living.

Pride in Pupil Voices

Lynsey Slater, Principal at Egloskerry Primary School, said:

“We’re proud of our pupils for taking an active interest in the food they eat and the impact it has on their health and the environment. Writing to their MP has given them a real opportunity to have their voices heard and see how they can make a difference. They were all thrilled to receive a reply.”
