Matthew Thompson Appointed Executive Principal at Pool Academy

Published On: 4 February 2026Last Updated: 4 February 2026By

Pool Academy has announced a change in leadership, marking a new chapter for the school and its wider trust.

Matthew Thompson, the current principal of Launceston College, has been appointed executive principal of both Launceston College and Pool Academy. Both schools are part of Athena Learning Trust. The appointment follows confirmation that Pool Academy principal Nick Ward will step down at the end of this academic year.

One Leader, Two Schools

In his new role, Matthew Thompson will lead both schools while also sharing his experience more widely across the trust. He will work directly with the communities in Launceston and Pool, with a focus on continuity and shared leadership.

Matthew has previously served as a Regional Director at Athena Learning Trust and has taught and trained teachers in China, Tanzania and across the UK. He lives in Cornwall with his wife and young children and is already well known to families at Launceston College for his visible and approachable leadership style.

Strong Results at Launceston College

The move to an executive principal model reflects the progress made at Launceston College in recent years. The school’s Attainment 8 score has risen again to 47.8, up from 46.0 in 2024.

Last summer, 54 percent of students achieved a grade 5 or above in both English and maths, continuing an upward trend. Strong performance at the highest grades has also been recorded in science, art, history, Spanish and maths.

What Happens Next

Over the coming weeks, the trust’s governing body will work closely with Matthew to confirm a leadership structure that keeps day to day operations focused on students, teaching quality and wellbeing.

Although his formal appointment begins in September, Matthew has already started strategic planning to support both schools ahead of the new academic year.

What the Leaders Said

Matthew Thompson said:
“I am proud to be taking on this role and grateful for the trust placed in me by Athena Learning Trust. Both Launceston College and Pool Academy are strong schools with committed staff and caring communities. My focus will be on working closely with students, families and colleagues in both settings to ensure continuity, high expectations and a calm, supportive learning environment where every young person feels valued and able to succeed.”

Outgoing Pool Academy principal Nick Ward said:
“I am very pleased to be handing over to Matthew. He is a thoughtful, principled leader with a clear commitment to students and staff. His work at Launceston College speaks for itself, and I know both schools will benefit enormously from his leadership, vision and energy.”
