Learner Rider Clocked at 41mph as Pedestrians Crossed

A learner rider has been recorded travelling well above the speed limit on a stretch of the A39 in Cornwall, according to Devon & Cornwall Police.

What happened

The incident took place on Friday 31st January 2026 at A39 Valley Tuckle. The road has a 30mph speed limit, but the rider was recorded travelling at 41mph (APP).

According to Devon & Cornwall Police Road Safety Team, the speed was particularly concerning as pedestrians were crossing the road just ahead of the rider. The police said the pedestrians, who were pushing a pushchair, were not expecting a vehicle to be approaching at that speed.

Impact on the rider

The rider was a learner at the time of the offence. Police say the rider may now receive three points on their full licence once they pass their test.

They also warned that one further offence could result in the rider having their licence revoked and reverting back to provisional status.

The Road Safety Team highlighted that exceeding the speed limit is dangerous at any time, but especially so for learner riders and when pedestrians are present.

The police reminder follows ongoing efforts to improve road safety across Cornwall, particularly on busy routes such as the A39.
