Yellow Weather Warning for Ice in Place from 5pm Today to 10am Tomorrow
A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued, covering the period from 5pm today until 10am tomorrow.
The warning highlights the risk of icy surfaces leading to difficult travel conditions, with possible injuries from slips and falls.
What to Expect
According to the Met Office, a band of rain and sleet, with a little snow on hills, will clear southwards across England and Wales during Friday evening and overnight.
As skies clear, temperatures are expected to fall below freezing. This will bring a risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces.
The warning states there will probably be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.
Travel Could Be Affected
The Met Office says icy surfaces may lead to difficult travel conditions.
Anyone heading out on foot is advised to try to use pavements along main roads, which are likely to be less slippery. Cyclists are encouraged to stick to main roads, which are more likely to have been treated.
Drivers are advised to check road conditions before travelling. Those using public transport should check bus and train timetables and amend travel plans if necessary.
Safety Advice
The Met Office advises people to keep themselves and their families safe when it is icy.
Planning to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal can help reduce the risk of accidents, slips and falls by avoiding the need to rush.
People are also advised to stay up to date with the weather forecast in their area, as weather warnings can change.
Why a Yellow Warning?
The Met Office says this yellow warning has a medium likelihood and a low impact.
The warning remains in place until 10am tomorrow.
