Club Secretary Brian Liggat Celebrates 80th Birthday and Over 30 Years at Lanhydrock

Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club is marking a major milestone as its long-serving Club Secretary, Brian Liggat, celebrates more than three decades at the heart of the club and his 80th birthday.

Brian has been part of the club’s story since 1991, when he first joined what was then Bodmin Golf & Country Club after attending an Open Day. Shortly afterwards, he was invited by the Club Captain to take on the role of Secretary, a position he has held ever since.

A constant presence through change

Reflecting on his time at the club, Brian said: “In 1993, Bodmin Golf & Country Club went into administration and was purchased by Hermon and Martin Bond, and I stayed on as the business transitioned to what we now know as Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club. 33 years later, I’m still here, loving golf, having fun and spending time with friends who are like family – making memories I’ll never forget along the way.”

Clare Bond, Owner and Director at Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club, paid tribute to Brian’s contribution.

“Brian has been a constant and cherished presence here at Lanhydrock,” said Clare. “His dedication, warmth and legendary sense of humour have made him a part of everyone’s life here. He has helped shape Lanhydrock into more than just a golf club – it’s a true community, and we’re delighted to celebrate this milestone with him.”

Memorable moments and plenty of laughs

Over the years, Brian says there have been plenty of moments he will never forget.

He recalls a player removing the wrong shoe and sock while attempting a shot from the pond, a visitor asking for the shower and ending up in the Clubroom wearing only a towel, and a moment when he mistakenly kissed a lady in the Clubroom, only to hear the response: “Do I know you!?”

“I think the away days and tours have brought even more laughs, but I can’t share those stories – as the saying goes, ‘what goes on tour, stays on tour!’” Brian added.

Supporting events and raising funds

Among the achievements Brian is most proud of is his involvement in the club’s events over the years. From Open Competitions and away days to Club Captains’ charity efforts, more than £100,000 has been raised for worthwhile causes.

“Being part of all the Club’s events over the years has been a real joy,” said Brian. “It’s wonderful to see everyone coming together and supporting causes that really make a difference. Knowing I’ve been involved in that and helped create those memories makes me feel very proud. I would like to thank Graham and Clare for my small part in making Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club a successful business.”

A birthday to remember

To celebrate his 80th birthday, 55 members joined Brian for a special golf day at Lanhydrock.

He also marked the occasion with a long weekend at The Belfry, the world-famous golf destination and four-time host of the Ryder Cup, alongside his son Wayne, grandson Jack and wider family.

Clare added: “We would like to wish a HUGE Happy Birthday to Brian, and thank him for being such an integral part of our story. Over the years, his dedication, warmth and brilliant personality have helped shape Lanhydrock Hotel & Golf Club into the special, heartfelt place it is today. Here’s to many more years of laughter, mischief and Brian bringing smiles to us all!”
