Falmouth RNLI has announced that Senior Inshore Lifeboat Helmsman Jamie Wakefield has passed out as a Coxswain on the Shannon class all-weather lifeboat Decibel Too.

Jamie Wakefield, who joined the crew in 2015, now takes on the responsibility of commanding the station’s all-weather lifeboat. He replaces his previous role as Senior Helmsman, with Mark Rickard stepping into that position.

Following in Family Footsteps

Jamie first became involved with Falmouth RNLI after hearing stories from his Great Uncle, Barry Timmins, who served at the station during the 1960s and 70s.

Since joining in 2015, Jamie has worked his way through the ranks. He became Senior Inshore Lifeboat Helm in 2018, making his move towards becoming an all-weather lifeboat Coxswain a natural next step.

Intensive Training Throughout 2025

Jamie’s training began at the start of 2025 when Decibel Too arrived on station.

His programme covered leadership, seamanship and search and rescue, with training taking place both in Falmouth and at RNLI College in Poole. He was formally assessed in February 2026.

Speaking about his achievement, Jamie said:

“Since joining I have always aspired to becoming a Coxswain and am really grateful to be given the opportunity. I am excited about the role but aware that it comes with a great deal of responsibility”

Coxswain Luke Wills also commented on Jamie’s success, saying:

“Jamie is a valuable asset, providing resilience and experience to the station ……. we are lucky to have him”

Jamie now steps into his new role as Coxswain on Decibel Too, marking the latest chapter in his journey with Falmouth RNLI.
