Trevor Price: Let’s Go and Live by the Ocean at Porthminster Gallery

A new exhibition celebrating the raw beauty of Cornwall’s coastline is set to open in St Ives this spring.

From 28th March to 9th May 2026, Porthminster Gallery will present Trevor Price: Let’s Go and Live by the Ocean, a selling exhibition of new and recent signed and editioned etchings, relief engravings and woodcut prints by award-winning St Ives based printmaker and lifeguard, Trevor Price.

The show follows the success of the gallery’s 2025 exhibition Trevor Price: Romantic Atlantic and brings together work that distils the shifting light, textures and atmosphere of the Cornish shore.

All works in the exhibition are for sale, with prints by Trevor priced between £200 and £1,200. The Own Art 0% APR purchase plan is available on all works in the show.

From Sea to Studio

Trevor Price, 2026, said:

“I am a sea swimmer and part of the surf lifesaving community here in St Ives. My studio looks across the bay, and I am either on, in, or looking out at the water, so it seemed inevitable that my art took the sea as its primary influence. With a nod to Japanese woodblock printing, Hokusai’s ‘Great Wave’ is substituted for those at Porthmeor.”

He added:

“I have been making prints for well over thirty years, specialising in finely detailed drypoint and engraved relief prints and large-scale woodcuts.”

“Woodblocks and polycarbonate sheets are carved, scratched, and engraved using chisels, blades, and power tools. Their surfaces are then rolled with ink and printed onto paper through a large etching press. It can easily take two or more months of platemaking with the larger works before the first print is taken, and with little room for error this first proof can be an anxious moment.”

“My workshop is in the heart of St Ives near the Porthminster Gallery and I often drop in there. I think they’re used to seeing me with blue-black ink under my fingernails, and on the palms of my hands! Printmaking is very much a hands-on process.”

Alongside Trevor’s work, a curated display of ceramics and sculpture by selected gallery artists will also be on view. The exhibition is supported by a selection of prints that are in the final stages of their edition, offering collectors a final opportunity before those editions close.

An Established Name in Printmaking

Born in Cornwall in 1966, Trevor studied printmaking at Falmouth and Winchester Schools of Art. He became an elected member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1994 and later served as its Vice President from 2013 to 2018.

His work is held in major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Guangdong Museum of Art in China, Yinchuan Contemporary Art Museum in China, Yale University in the USA, The Office of Public Works in Dublin and The Bank of England.

In 2020, he undertook a large relief print commission for China’s National Academy of Painting, exhibited at China’s National Art Museum in Beijing before touring the country. More recently, he won the Viking Prize for Print at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2025 and the Printmaking Today Award at the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers 2017 exhibition.

Trevor shares his time between a studio close to Tower Bridge in London and his studio in St Ives, near Porthminster Gallery.
