Revd James Treasure Appointed Bishop of St Germans

Downing Street has announced that the next Bishop of St Germans will be the Revd James Treasure.

James Treasure, who was ordained as a priest in 2017, will join the Diocese of Truro later this year. His appointment has been welcomed by church leaders, with plans already in place for his consecration and formal welcome to the diocese in May.

Background and Church Leadership

Before becoming a priest in the Church of England, James had been a leader in a free church. Since his ordination, he has served in a number of leadership roles focused on growing congregations and engaging with communities.

From 2018, James served as Vicar and Resource Church Leader at St Thomas and St Luke’s in Dudley, locally known as “Top Church”. During his time there, he led a major redevelopment and mission effort aimed at revitalising the historic Grade II* listed building while expanding outreach across the parish.

The work was supported by significant grant funding and focused on strengthening the church’s presence in the local community.

In 2023, James was also appointed Team Rector for the wider Dudley parish. Alongside his leadership at St Thomas and St Luke’s, he took responsibility for four additional churches.

Moving to the Diocese of Truro

James is married to Esther, who is a curate, and they have three young adult sons.

Speaking about his new role, James said:

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Diocese of Truro, the land of the saints, at this exciting time and cannot wait to discover all that God is doing amongst you! I am especially looking forward to discovering more of the beauty of the Church across our diocese – in its worship, its communities, and its faithful presence in every place.”

The Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd David Williams, also welcomed the announcement.

David said:

“I am so pleased to welcome James here as bishop-designate of St Germans. We are looking forward to James, Esther and their family joining us later this year.

“James has spent his whole working life in church leadership and will bring significant pastoral, preaching and strategic gifts to our team. I am delighted we have discerned a call for him and his family here.”

Consecration and Welcome Service

James and his family are expected to move to the Diocese of Truro in the spring.

He will be consecrated as a bishop on 1st May at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Following this, he will be formally welcomed to the diocese and will take up his seat at Truro Cathedral during a service on 10th May at 4.30pm.

The service is open to the public, with further details expected to be shared in the coming weeks.
