Hidden Danger in the Garden: Hedgehogs Hurt by Strimmers

A hedgehog rescue is warning gardeners to take a moment to check long grass and borders before using strimmers, after several animals were admitted with serious injuries.

Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue says it currently has three hedgehogs in its care with strimmer injuries, while five have already been admitted this year with similar wounds.

According to the rescue, these incidents are completely preventable.

Why Hedgehogs Are at Risk

The group explained that hedgehogs rely on a natural defence that unfortunately leaves them vulnerable around garden tools.

“A hedgehog’s natural defence is to curl up into a ball, not to run away — which sadly leaves them vulnerable to garden tools.”

Because they do not try to escape, hedgehogs hidden in long grass, borders or piles of garden debris can easily be injured if an area is strimmed without being checked first.

Simple Checks That Could Save a Life

Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue is asking people to take a few simple precautions before starting garden work.

The rescue shared the following advice:

• Check long grass, borders and undergrowth before strimming
• Strim slowly and carefully
• If possible, gently move piles of leaves and grass first

The group says taking a moment to look through an area before cutting could make all the difference.

“A quick check could save a life. Please help spread the word and protect hedgehogs.”
