West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team Receives King’s Award and Announces Leadership Change

Honour and Farewell: Emotional Night for Rescue Team

West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team has marked a significant evening, celebrating national recognition while also saying goodbye to a long-serving team leader.

King’s Award Presented at Special AGM

The team shared that they were presented with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service trophy and certificate by Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho during their recent AGM. The event took place at Tregenna Castle and recognised what the team described as the dedication, compassion and commitment of every member.

Each team member also received their own King’s Award badge during the evening. The team added that they were pleased to celebrate alongside some of their key fundraisers for 2025, with more details expected to follow.

They described the event as a special occasion and one they will remember for many years.

Farewell to Team Leader Chris Hughes

Alongside the celebrations, the team also announced that Team Leader Chris Hughes has stepped down after serving since 2016.

Chris has been involved in several roles during that time, including Team Leader, Training Officer, 4×4 driver, controller and mentor. The team said his contribution has helped shape what the organisation is today, highlighting the experience he brought from his military and work background.

His decision to step down comes as he begins a new chapter outside of Cornwall.

Interim Leadership Announced

Following Chris Hughes’ departure, Saffa will take on the role of Interim Team Leader. The team confirmed that call-out members will come together to elect a successor in due course.

The update closed with a message of thanks to Chris for his years of service.
