Falmouth RNLI Volunteer Qualifies as Afloat Mechanic

Falmouth RNLI has congratulated volunteer crew member Cadan Harris after he successfully qualified as an Afloat Mechanic on the station’s Shannon class all-weather lifeboat.

Cadan, who joined the crew in January 2019, has steadily progressed through a number of roles at the station. He passed out as an inshore lifeboat helm in April 2022 and later became an inshore lifeboat mechanic. His latest qualification marks another step forward in his RNLI journey.

When asked about his motivation for joining, Cadan said:
‘I’ve been interested in lifeboats since I was a boy, visiting stations when possible and hoping to join a crew one day. Becoming a mechanic is something I’ve wanted to do since I joined.’

Intensive Training and Final Assessment

To achieve the role, Cadan completed twelve months of intensive training both at the station and at the Lifeboat College in Poole.

His final assessment saw the station’s Shannon class all-weather lifeboat RNLB Decibel II head out to sea under the command of Coxswain Adam West. RNLI Regional Plant and Machinery Assessor Matt Parr carried out a full set of operational drills and emergency scenarios to test Cadan’s knowledge and skills.

A Crucial Role at Sea

Afloat mechanics play a vital role during lifeboat operations. They are responsible for managing and maintaining the vessel’s machinery and onboard systems while at sea. The role also includes overseeing communications with the Coastguard and casualties, as well as coordinating responses to onboard emergencies such as fires, flooding or breakdowns.

Station Coxswain Luke Wills praised Cadan’s achievement, saying:
‘A massive congratulations to Cadan on his achievement, we are all incredibly proud to have him on station, the skills and experience he brings to the role are crucial. My thanks to all the team who have supported Cadan through his training, it is truly a team effort to pass on the skills and knowledge to the future generations, this role is crucial to maintain a 24/7 all-weather lifeboat capability in the port of Falmouth.’

Cadan’s qualification strengthens the station’s ability to respond to emergencies at sea around the clock, supporting its ongoing lifesaving work in and around Falmouth.
