STOP Before You Approach That Seal: What You Need to Know

A reminder has been issued by British Divers Marine Life Rescue urging people to think carefully before approaching seals on beaches, as their behaviour at this time of year can often be misunderstood.

Why seals may look different right now

According to the organisation, seals seen on beaches at the moment are often:

• Big and round rather than small and fluffy-white
• Independent and no longer relying on their mother
• Fast asleep while resting on the beach
• Lying on one side

These behaviours are described as normal for this time of year and do not necessarily mean the animal is in distress.

When to be concerned

British Divers Marine Life Rescue has highlighted specific signs that could indicate a seal may need help. These include:

• Coughing
• Sneezing
• Heavy breathing
• Discharges

The group says these symptoms can sometimes be caused by a parasite known as lungworm, which is often found in wild seals.

What to do if you’re unsure

Anyone who is unsure whether a seal needs assistance or is simply resting is encouraged to get in touch for advice.
