60 Hens Need Homes in Redruth or Face Uncertain Future

Published On: 8 April 2026Last Updated: 8 April 2026By

An urgent appeal has been issued for animal lovers in Cornwall, as 60 ex-commercial hens need new homes in Redruth this weekend.

The British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) is holding a rehoming event on Sunday 12th April, giving the hens a chance at a new life. However, people must register by 2pm on Friday 10th April if they want to adopt.

Without enough people coming forward, the hens may face slaughter.

A Second Chance for Working Hens

The hens involved have spent their lives laying eggs for supermarkets. Now at around 18 months old, they have reached the end of their commercial use.

Despite this, the BHWT says they still have plenty to give and deserve the chance to enjoy a free-range retirement.

Anyone adopting is asked to provide basic care, including food, water, security and some attention.

“They Make Wonderful Pets”

Andy Hill from the British Hen Welfare Trust said:

“People are often surprised by how much joy hens bring. They’re funny, curious little characters, they love routine, and they’re genuinely a delight to care for. Plus, they’re still more than happy to pop out the occasional egg.

“With spring finally here, this is the ideal time to start. These girls are more than ready for a fresh beginning, and they really do make wonderful pets.”

About the Charity

The British Hen Welfare Trust was established in 2005 by Jane Howorth and is the UK’s first registered charity dedicated to rehoming laying hens. Jane was awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year’s Honours.

Last year, the charity rehomed its one millionth hen alongside His Majesty King Charles III.

Across the UK, around 9 million hens are kept in colony cages. The BHWT has so far helped more than one million ex-commercial hens find retirement homes, all of which were originally destined for slaughter.

The charity operates 48 collection points nationwide and is supported by around 1,400 volunteers. It also works to educate consumers about caged eggs that can be found in processed foods such as pasta, quiches, cakes and mayonnaise.
