Penlee RNLI Called to Paddle Boarders Near St Michael’s Mount

Penlee RNLI was called into action on Thursday 9th April after concerns were raised about two paddle boarders near St Michael’s Mount.

Lifeboat Launched Across Mount’s Bay

The crew were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard following a report that two people were in difficulty around 200 yards south of St Michael’s Mount.

In calm conditions, the Atlantic 85 lifeboat launched under the command of helm James Roberts, supported by a crew of three RNLI volunteers. The lifeboat travelled across Mount’s Bay at speeds of up to 35 knots.

No Assistance Required

On arrival, the crew located the two paddle boarders, who had been paddling around St Michael’s Mount. It was confirmed they were not in difficulty and did not require assistance.

The incident was later described as a false alarm with good intent.

Importance of Calling for Help

Although no help was needed in this case, the decision to alert the Coastguard was welcomed. In different circumstances, it could have made a critical difference.

Anyone who spots someone in difficulty at sea is urged to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

RNLI Safety Advice for Paddle Boarders

The RNLI has shared the following advice for those heading out on paddle boards:

• Always wear your leash and hold onto your board if you get into trouble. It will help you float
• Always carry a means of calling for help on your person that is easy to reach
• Always check the weather forecast and tide times
• Avoid offshore winds as they can make it difficult to return to shore
• Always wear a personal flotation device and suitable clothing for the conditions
• Try to paddle with someone else who can raise the alarm in an emergency
