CLA Reminds Public to Follow Countryside Code After Gate Incidents

Gates Left Open Spark Distressing Incidents Across Countryside

Farmers and landowners are raising concerns after a series of incidents involving gates being left open on public footpaths, with reports of damage to crops and serious animal welfare issues.

The warning comes from the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), which represents farmers and landowners in England and Wales. The organisation says several incidents have been reported by its members in recent weeks.

Reports of Damage and Animal Harm

According to the CLA, problems linked to gates being left open have included cattle mixing with other groups, damage to spring crops, and in one particularly serious case, a family horse had to be euthanised after becoming trapped.

These incidents have caused distress for those affected and highlighted the risks that can arise when simple countryside guidelines are not followed.

Reminder to Follow the Countryside Code

With the weather improving after a long, wet winter, the CLA is reminding people heading outdoors to follow the Countryside Code.

The Countryside Code provides guidance for visiting parks, waterways and rural areas. It focuses on respecting others, protecting the environment and enjoying the outdoors safely.

Key points include:

• Following local signs
• Keeping dogs under control
• Taking litter home
• Leaving gates as found
• Avoiding damage to nature

Call for Responsible Behaviour

Ann Maidment, CLA South West Regional Director, said:

“We want people to enjoy the countryside, but it’s important they do so safely and responsibly. We’re encouraging people to make the right choices when they are out and about, and now livestock are enjoying more time out in fields, it is even more important to follow the Countryside Code.

“The incidents we have been alerted to have caused a great amount of distress to those involved. We urge people to stick to public rights of way, close any gates they come across, and follow notices where permissive footpaths have been closed. By following the Countryside Code’s simple rules everybody can enjoy the countryside safely and without causing disruption to those who live and work on the land.”
