Published On: 16 April 2026Last Updated: 16 April 2026By

Thousands of families across Cornwall found out today whether their child has secured a place at their preferred primary school for September 2026, and the results make for encouraging reading.

Cornwall Council received 4,757 applications for reception places, with 4,559 children offered their first choice school. That works out at 95.84%, nudging slightly above last year’s figure of 95.76% and comfortably ahead of last year’s national average of 92.6%.

Nearly every child in Cornwall, 99.52%, was offered a place at their first, second or third preference school, up from 99.28% the previous year.

What the Council Said

Cllr Hilary Frank, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families at Cornwall Council, welcomed the figures.

“It’s fantastic news that so many children and families have been offered their first preference primary school for this September,” said Hilary.

“This is all down to the hard work of our teams who work closely with schools across Cornwall. We consistently offer a higher-than-average number of children their preferred school and I would like to thank everyone who played a part this year.”

Hilary acknowledged that not every family will have received the news they were hoping for today.

“We do recognise that some families may be disappointed by the allocation for their child and there is an independent appeals process that can be followed,” she said, adding that more information is available on the school appeals page on the council’s website.

Getting Ready for September

For families who have secured a place, Cornwall Council is encouraging parents and carers to visit Starting Reception, a resource offering practical tips, activities and guidance to help children feel confident ahead of their first day.
