West Cornwall Search & Rescue Takes On the World in Norway

A small team of volunteers from West Cornwall is heading to Norway this week to compete on the international stage for the very first time.

West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team will travel to Scandinavia to take part in the SAR Games from the 24th to the 26th of April 2026, pitting their skills against rescue teams from across the world.

What Are the SAR Games?

Established in 1975, the SAR (Search and Rescue) Games is an annual international competition testing participants across a range of realistic scenarios focused on search and rescue and first aid skills.

Team Chair Andy Brelsford said the club was thrilled to be making its debut on the world stage.

“We are very excited to be entering a team in this year’s SAR Games in Norway. It will be our first appearance on the international stage. The event gives us a fantastic opportunity to meet and compete with rescuers from other countries, while proudly representing West Cornwall in a friendly but competitive environment.”

What Will the Team Face?

Team Leader Saffa Perry, who will be among those travelling to Norway, outlined what the competition involves.

“The games involve a mix of skills we use in real-life search and rescue operations, including navigation, communication, search techniques, first aid, stretcher handling and, of course, teamwork.”

Based at United Downs and covering the TR postcode area, West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team provides inland search and rescue support for missing or injured people, delivered entirely by trained volunteers.

No Mountains, No Problem

The team arrives in Norway with an impressive pedigree. Last year, they were awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, one of the highest honours available to volunteer organisations in the UK.

While medals may not be the expectation for a debut appearance, Saffa is clear that the team is more than ready.

“Although we operate in an area without mountains, we train to the same high standards as mountain rescue teams and are part of the wider UK rescue community. We have strong expertise in medical care, rope work and rescue techniques, and we’re looking forward to showcasing our Cornish approach while learning from others along the way.”
