90 People Pack Perranporth Pub for Climate Crisis Film Night

Peran Moon MP pledges support for emergency TV broadcast after sold-out community screening

Around 90 people gathered at The Seiners Arms in Perranporth on the 22nd of April for a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing, a film exploring the climate and nature crisis, followed by a public discussion about what the issues raised might mean for the local area.

The event was organised by Perranzabuloe Action on Climate Emergency (PACE).

MP Backs Call for Televised Briefing

Perran Moon MP attended the screening and stayed for the full discussion afterwards. He confirmed he will back the Parliamentary Call for a televised emergency briefing on the climate and nature crisis.

The screening forms part of a wider UK programme of events designed to help communities engage with the climate and nature crisis. The programme has the support of naturalist Chris Packham, who said: “I’d encourage people everywhere to attend a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing. This new film creates exactly the kind of honest local conversation we now urgently need, both about the threat from climate and nature breakdown, but also about what we can do, together with our politicians, to build a better future.”

Food Security Dominates the Discussion

Discussion after the film focused particularly on concerns about food security, with participants also exploring how local communities can keep the conversation going and engage with their elected representatives. Organisers noted how quickly the conversation moved from concern into practical questions about what people locally might be able to do together.

Pip Cook from Perranporth Marine Conservation Group, Mags Hopwood from Incredible Edible Perranporth and Cllr Jo Pentecost from PACE each spoke about their groups’ work and how people can get involved, inviting attendees to upcoming events.

What Is PACE?

PACE is a community volunteer group set up in 2020 under the leadership of Cllr Jo Pentecost, focused on improving the local environment and tackling the nature and climate crisis in the parish. Over the past year alone, the group has:

• Sown a 100-metre wildflower meadow bed around the Perranporth Inner Green
• Planted trees and a wildlife-supporting hedge in Ponsmere Valley
• Erected 37 bird, bat and owl boxes around the parish
• Secured free water butts from South West Water, due to be installed at a number of locations shortly
• Rejuvenated planters in St Piran’s Road with herbs and pollinator-friendly plants
• Hosted a Spring Into Action Garden Festival attended by over 400 people
• Run multiple willow weaving workshops and regular gardening meet-ups at their Wild Child Garden
• Supported Incredible Edible Perranporth volunteers in growing free produce for the community to pick
• Continued beach litter collection and recycling of broken bodyboards through their Beach Group
• Begun a new project to rewild a dilapidated part of the old airfield at Cligga

PACE next meets on Wednesday 6th May at Chyanhale Council Offices. The group’s annual Spring Into Action Garden Festival also takes place at the same location on Saturday 31st May, from 12pm to 4pm.
